Inductions were done in site offices on the morning that contractors arrived at work, with some of Aqua’s developments in rural, remote sites without permanent site managers. When sub-contractors, such as carpenters or plumbers, arrived at various times, it was essential that they were provided with all the relevant site information and it was securely logged.
Aqua reviewed their systems to create a strategic plan that would improve systems to:
- Protect the health and safety of the workforce
- Streamline the distribution of rules and regulations
- Adhere to best practice site operating procedures
The unprecedented disruption that COVID-19 placed on the construction industry encouraged Aqua to react quickly to keep their development programme on track. Safety in the workplace was the driving force in their plan to implement new site operating procedures.
Solution
Following careful assessment, Aqua realised that an online induction system should be implemented to improve productivity and mitigate risk. Adopting the GetOnSite system, with easily accessible information stored in the cloud, enabled Aqua to:
- Eliminate the need for face-to-face inductions in crowded site offices
- Ensure contractors logs were recorded and securely stored
- Speed up the process of obtaining essential information
After contacting GetOnSite and having a demo, an online system was set up immediately. The system was quickly rolled out on sites that could reopen after lockdown and on all new building sites.
“The coronavirus pandemic encouraged us to update and improve our systems, and we quickly realised that it was a good idea to pre-qualify contractors before they arrived on site.”
Alex Wood – Operations Manager
Benefits
The new online induction system quickly revealed how much more effective it was at collecting important medical information. Contractors were much more comfortable filling in an online form than relaying personal information face-to-face in a crowded office.
Online inductions have enabled Aqua to adhere to social distancing regulations, enabling them to:
- Easily collect important medical information
- Reduce the risk of the spread of coronavirus
- Save time and increase productivity on site
“The process was very straight forward once the template was set up by GetOnSite. The training we received showed how simple it was, and ongoing changes to site specific inductions are quick and easy to do.”
Results
Aqua was able to re-open construction sites that were in mid-development and complete work on new developments for housing association homes. At the construction director level, implementing the GetOnSite system has provided an additional resource to ensure that work is completed on time and within budget.
